For white and Black men alike, hairiness indicates “natural” masculinity – it “shouts ‘man,’” demarcates “hunkiness,” and adulterates youth. Tellingly, the only instance in which whiteness and hirsuteness are explicitly associated idealizes hairlessness in white masculinity: “Stay Tan Buff and hairless … you are so fuckin’ hot … perfect white guy.” Coupled with the general absence of semiotic glorification of hairiness in the most popular images of white men, this comment illustrates how the sexual desirability of racialized physical attribute functions as a sociopolitical control of Black masculinity in gay porn by framing it in a context of subhumanity. As such, consumers and producers discursively link hairiness and Blackness in pornography featuring Black performers. For example, user “WHITE4BLACK”1 lists among their “Turn Ons” “mainly Black guys (especially OLDER Black men. You can’t be too old for me … no age ceiling at all) Hairy chests …” Other white users similarly connect Blackness and hairiness in their lists:
